THINGS TO KNOW WHEN HIRING
A CONTRACTOR

MAKE SURE THEY ARE A LICENSED CONTRACTOR

  • Any contractor bidding a job totaling more than $500 MUST have a contractor’s license.
  • Any advertising, from phonebook adds to T-shirts, must by law, include their valid contractors license number.
  • Be careful, no contractors license means no liability insurance.
  • No liability insurance means NO protection to the homeowner.
  • Verify a contractors license and insurance by going to the C.S.L.B. website at www.cslb.ca.gov.

GET A TOTAL JOB COST

  • Get a total price to complete the entire job.
  • Never accept an open ended quote, for example, an “hourly” or “daily” rate until the job is completed. (It is like writing them a blank check.)
  • Make sure all materials needed to complete the job are included, or else otherwise specified.

ASK FOR REFERENCES AND PHOTOS OF PAST WORK

  • This will give you a sense of what kind of relationship you will have with your contractor. As well as…
  • The quality of workmanship you will receive.
  • How efficiently your work will be completed.
  • How well they stay on schedule.

KNOW WHO’S DOING THE WORK

  • Ask them if they “personally” will be doing your tile work.
  • Some contractors will bid jobs then subcontract the work out to a cheaper labor force.
  • Others will only be there to give you a bid and pick up a check, but will not be there for any of the installation.

FINALLY, MAKE SURE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THEM IN YOUR HOME

  • Are they Clean?
  • Are they Courteous?
  • Are the Respectful?
